NMP 3 - Moving Image

Video // Moving image

As a bit of background to this I have always considered myself to be a stills photographer, in work, thought, approach and deed, moving image has always been slightly outside of any remit, I’ve shot bits but only superficially.

So when choosing my modules for my MA, New Media Practice came up, i saw this as providing me with a great opportunity to explore moving image. Thinking back it’s something I hadn’t done since my early course in the 1990’s called PFV (Photography/Film/Video) Fun fact about that time is that I was in the same year as Claire, Shane and Paddy, wonders what happened to them?

The side step from still to moving is an interesting one, through my working life I saw video/TV as a bit fussy, going in to a job after TV had been in was always a ‘mare they took up everyone’s time and used up all the good will it made my job more difficult, moving image people always believe they are the most important people in any room too, well that’s my experience anyway.

This is completely different kettle of fish but maybe I still have my old experiences lurking somewhere in the back of my mind, I really want to experience moving image though, in part to add that to my art practice and use the experience to aid my teaching so here I am.

The first questions that have surfaced, triggering this blog post and that need to be asked and answered are:

o   What’s different about this medium?

o   What are the strengths of moving images?

o   Where do I see it going?

o   How do I see a final piece?

Ok lets take those one at a time, as ever these are my own answers so forgive wording, lack of sophistication, brevity etc.

Differences – well to be flippant, splitting them into still and moving

One shows thousands of images to tell a story. Other uses one image to tell a thousand stories

Strengths - moving image sets a scene, tells a story quickly, effectively and emotively. It has certain powers what are they? The coupling with audio is a a major difference and one that can be used very effectively, carefully though as bad audio is often seized upon.

Going – well the whole world is moving so it’s entering that stream, being involved, telling my stories, adding another string to the bow, a differing visions that I can facilitate.

Final piece, well that’s most difficult to answer, should you envisage it before hand or see where work and research take you? That’s a larger question that needs answering for a number of reasons in a later post.

With all that in mind I have decided to produce 3 pieces as experiments and exercises to help with shooting, editing and audio, as well as to produce content (remember content is king)

First attempt is a piece of the act/art/task of reading.

Second will be a comment on the commute I have to endure

Third will be my “main” piece on middling sin as my main idea for assignment 2.

I will blog about these individually as I go along, one feeling that always seems to crop up is this strange association with moving image art. It’s a sort of a cross between a cringe and haven’t I seen this/been done before?

Will have to address that at a later post, maybe through research I will address this feeling in a more academic way.

Thank you for reading..
