Where I’m at..
The point where I’m up to..
Apologies for the space in-between blogs it’s been a while since I last wrote, life’s thrown quite a lot at me these last few months…
The main one that I will talk about here is the PhD journey, it’s taken a few unexpected twists and turns but I think I have caught sight of it recently. I know now that it needs a little more structure to completely get the wheels in motion. I must also keep in mind that by it’s very nature it’s a slow process and you must take the time if you want it done correctly…must also remember that there is (has been) a global pandemic on so my headspace maybe somewhat skewered plus it’s only been 8/9 months since I completed my MA…
As work winds down though for the summer this gives me a chance to get it sorted, the abstract and proposal feel like quite the big step but going forward from today, I’m hoping that l will have a bit more time to focus on the final stretch of getting it started this year.
I have made progress; I’ve narrowed it down to doing one of my own design rather than a preapproved one, have the subject area down to two (slightly overlapping) ones, decided on the institution and therefore the supervisors (fingers crossed).
It feels like such a big step and reading about other people’s journeys quite the daunting one, but if I want to progress, I feel that it’s the only choice to enable that.
Coupled with this I’ve been looking at my practice, identifying factors within it that need examining to help with the progression of the vision, ideas and identifying aspects, all of which will be talked about on here and you’ll get bored of hearing about I’m sure, first step was to put together a folio of images and see how they fit. The rangefinder camera element via my MA practice is something that I feel encompasses the UT doctrine very well, it’s the way you see and feel the image which compliments the ideas behind them that shows itself to be the best way to make images.
I won’t talk too much about the technical as I almost feel that it’s a behind the scenes aspect and I’d rather focus on ideas but there will be occasions where it will be the subject of a blog or two.
I’m aiming to blog a lot more as I start the next chapter, it will probably be quite PhD heavy to start with but will look at other subjects as and when they come up, so again thanks for reading and any feedback, questions etc, you can get me on the socials and via email.
As always with these types of things we need an image, which is the header and here.
I’m attempting something new to me here by not illustrating this blog but by attempting to use the images to signpost the discussion aspect of the next blog. Next subject which will be about authorship, in previous guises the practical approach was to have no style so you could be a blank canvas for the work but I’m feeling through a lot of feedback (thanks go to Format festival for their opinions and Gem Fletcher for many ideas in this) that UT needs a very definite style and strong authorship, the next step is to identify what that is, so I have to unlearn a lot of what I’d learned and to drill down into what it urgent temporality is. Do you see a style? Any aspect of the images recognisable as being taken by me? Does style matter or is it solely down to the substance?
Thanks again for reading and see you next time.
