Semester 3 - Images:Spaces and Frames
Edging closer to the deadline and revisiting the ideas of a well-resolved project and one of the factors in my mind about having a well resolved piece of work would be the viewing factor.
I see one of the problems with this current situation is how people will see the work, I need as much help as possible for it to be seen in it’s best light, the work has a few problematic features one of which is the fact that I’ve based this work around the New Topographies show of 1975 which even according to the curator William Jenkins had
“..little doubt that the problem at the centre of this exhibition is one of style”
William Jenkins
So therefore the audiencing of this work becomes a major factor inherent in it, even when the original work was shown people had difficulties with it reactions such as :
“What is this?”
“On initial viewing the work can be classed as quite boring but then as you look longer and harder then you still stuff”
So I’m adding in a further barrier to this by only having it available to be viewed on screen, the work needs help as Deborah Bright comments I need the help of hushed tones:
“Modes of framing and hanging, neutral walls, minimal labeling, high rents in high-fashion retail districts, and a reverential hush provoke feelings of awe and respect before the images, even before we’ve inspected them closely.”
Deborah Bright.
Also I’m calling upon the old photography adage of ways of showing work that maybe isn’t the greatest by printing big, to help people view them as better pieces of work and get them to see the work in a new light. lf in doubt print them big !
So the answer to that is to put them in a space, but how in the current climate to do this? Well let me tell you, the next step is something I teased earlier and that is making a space to show how I think the work will look, now there are many ways to do this but see the next blog to see how I did it..
