Semester 3 - Images:Exhibition Spaces

So as I said earlier and was mentioned a few blog posts ago, the big reveal is to make Exhibition spaces so the work can exist in a space. The plan was to make a space around the exhibiting of the slides as if they were light panels or cibachromes in an exhibition setting.

I’m also hoping to ‘exhibit’ the black and white work and even the screen-based work possibly.

So I’ve ordered wood cut 30cm squares and will bolt this together and paint it to be a gallery space so you can see in actuality rather than a digital mock up what the work should appear like.

I felt this was important, as one of the main reasons for choosing film was the tactile nature of the colour transparency, it’s rendition of colour and wow factor when viewed on a lightbox, these medium helps lift the work, much like the exhibiting and placing ion the museum helped the original NT get a hold on the imagination and state their case.

The problem being is one of scale, the original slides that came out of the medium format camera are 7cm by 5.8cm and to scale them up to a lightbox or Ciba’s is a difficult task during lockdown so i scaled the exhibition space down to meet them.

I’ve planning on making 3 spaces that will be photographed (and video recorded) to exhibit the work, I’m even planning on having a ‘private view’ to show the work.

Add in: So phase 2 of the original lockdown has scuppered the idea of a private view now as well, so I’ll just have to make do with the regular vistors to my spaces.

I realise that when coming up with this plan, that I will push my DIY skills to the limit so I couldn’t have done it without my fantastic partner (again huge thank you Lx)

Main problems have been that the place I ordered the wood online form seem to have hit a few snags and their communication is terrible so I’m not sure where it is or even if it’s coming, so I’ve had to resort to a high street wood merchant.

I just want to say what utter rubbish that idea was! They had imposed a 4 cut per customer limit by that high street DIY store, even though I observed the person in front of me in closer proximity (staff member no mask) that I was ever going to get and the idea that I may want more than 4 cuts seemed incredulous to him, I do hate that macho environment that these stores project

Rant over. Sorry.

So here are the spaces with the accompanying images.

Idea for space 1 would be large scale Black and White Images of the work printed together and shown in strips of, quite large I’m imaging this about 2m plus to get the effect of the work across. This would be quite traditional way of shooting and exhibiting the work.

Ideas for space 2 would to make cibachromes or light panels from the original slides, this would be shown quite large and have a wow effect that would draw people in and then we can discuss the finer aspects of the work, what ity’s about, composition, content etc.

Ideas for space 3 is a mixture really form life sized polaroid images, 1.5m high to framed colour negative prints to large scale digital posters images reminiscent of the current trends in the photOland art scene to massive blow ups of the iPhone images shot as part of the work and possibly large scale deconstructed black and white images of the work.

The viewing of the work is a major factor in the New Topographicals effect and cause so I feel that bringing this element in was vital and with the lockdown my options were limited but think it’s worked quite well. I’m pleased to get this important aspect finished and ready to show, they may even become the final piece for exhibition, with a bit of tidying up of course.
