Semester 3 - Images: Final Statement.

My final statement about the work that is being submitted is here:

This work is mainly about spaces; those spaces that are “in between”, how we see those spaces, what those spaces do, what they contain and how they are viewed.

The work came about due to a rather mundane set of circumstances.  In the middle of lockdown my Mothers oven had broken and she needs a microwave as a stop-gap, which I went out to buy at the big local Sainsbury’s. On the journey to deliver the microwave, I got a phone call saying the council had been and that it was just the grill that had broken, not the oven, so there is now no need to drop off the microwave until normal shopping, the next day. The journey home from that point was both familiar and new, seeing this place with its landmarks and strangeness compelled me to revisit and document these spaces.

The work also contains subtexts of how photographic projects are constructed, the aesthesis of everyday scenes, ideas of what local is and how we view photography at this moment in time.

The images from this route fall into the 3 categories, the randomness and absurdity of the everyday, pubs and clubs and petro-aesthetics

These subjects have defined my (photographic) life for the last 30 years. I have experienced and driven past similar sites for many years but until now I have never really had the chance to stop and make that image, for this project I stopped to look, went back and did just that.
