Semester 3 - Images:What attracts me to these areas?

Write, right that’s the writing done and in, wonder what how it will be received?

Thinking about my practice, what does reflexivity do for this and for this final piece? What attracts me to these areas, I wonder what do I see? As I go round on this visit stopping and looking at the *splaces I noticed and was drawn to as I drove past I start to wonder if I’m the only one to photograph these spaces**? I start to think of the William Jenkins quote from the original New Topographics exhibition about how

“…we should look at the spaces in between the urban, the suburban and the wild” ***

That’s what i was doing, reflexivity on looking back at what i used to photograph has me looking the same, as when I first started photography, I didn’t know then what I was looking at I was drawn to places to photograph them, these would wither be run down, somewhere to ride a bike or something strange or ironic, an architectural hiccup maybe or as the Italian practitioners used to look for (around the same time interestingly) those “failures in urban planning”

I wonder what draws me to these splaces though, a child like looking back to another simpler age, a familiarity, a desire to be and see these spaces for a sense of comfort, a recognizeisation that these spaces don’t seem to have much time left, the march of commerce will leave them behind or destroy them, we’re first seeing this in the pubs that once served the community, I counted 15 that are either repurposed or closed down, who knows what will happen to them after lockdown? Then the shops that occupy the roads on this route, you wonder how many of them stay afloat and more so again with this current divide between rich and poor will further crack.

Started to make a list of the sites I saw and what interests me about them just a rough list and that has currently 16 places on it, I think I’ll have to do a few more visits to see what work comes out like, what is it about these places? I wonder what these sites have in common?

When I traced my journey back I notice I’d almost been in a complete triangle, funny that, triangle has 3 sides and you need to control 3 actions to get a correct exposure, funny how these things relate to each other. Am I starting to crack now? Seeing links where there are none or am i broken? Question if this is a valid construct?

Onwards..

*Yes I’m aware of the spelling mistake but I’m merging spaces with places as the areas I’m looking at seem to fall somewhere in between.

**Side note of what happens to theses images.
