Unlearning prevailing aesthetic
Through recent research I’ve been looking at the prevailing aesthetic (mainly western). How that is influenced by certain gatekeepers which in turn is supported by others and then is further manifested into a system of popular consensus. Much like british secondary education can be seen as a brainwashing of minds to believe in certain myths, art in particular where you are only seen as ‘good’ at it if you can draw photographically or if you only just use 2/3 tools in Photoshop editing.
How is best to unlearn these prevailing aesthetics then?
Discount all that they say/believe/think?
Subscribe to them then slowly unpick from the inside using observation and thinking
Form a more ascetic approach, indulge only in that which does not conform to the aesthetic?
Or a pathway that is somewhat in between all three?
The only definite is that it needs to be widely unlearned.
